Filmmaker Rosemary House

Rosemary House has been writing, directing and producing dramatic and documentary films for Rock Island and other companies since 1990, when she produced "Rufus Guinchard" about the legendary Newfoundland fiddler, and directed the award winning short "When Women Are Crazy". Since then she has made 20 films, including dramatic shorts, documentaries and features.

Highlights include the feature film "Violet", which she wrote and directed. The comedy starred Mary Walsh and Peter Macneill, and was produced by Mary Sexton for Dark Flower Productions.

Two of her most popular NFB documentaries are "Rain, Drizzle and Fog", her arts doc about her beloved hometown of St. John’s, and the acclaimed "Salvation", about the homeless in Toronto, nominated for the Donald Brittain Award and a popular online doc at nfb.ca.

In 2004 Rosemary wrote, directed and produced the feature doc "Bloomsday Cabaret", about music in the life of the Irish writer James Joyce. The film was nominated for a Gemini for best direction and screens globally, including BRAVO in Canada, RTE in Ireland and ABC in Australia.

House's 2007 doc, also for BRAVO is "Christopher House: Ahead of the Curve" about the celebrated artistic director of Toronto Dance Theatre (also Rosemary's brother!) The film screened at the Bloor Cinema in Toronto to glowing reviews. John Doyle wrote in the Toronto Globe “If you’ve ever wondered about the point of dance, the answer is here”. The film garnered 2 Gemini nominations, for direction and editing.

The feature film project "The Ballad of Maura MacKenzie", written and produced by House, and adapted from Joan Clark's award winning novel, An Audience of Chairs, is in late stage development with Judy Holm and Michael MacNamara of Markham Street Films in Toronto.

A new project, "Hold Fast", produced and written by House, directed by Justin Simms and adapted from Kevin Major's seminal Newfoundland novel, is also now in first draft development as a feature film.

Rosemary also produces the networking site 48th Parallel Project, for women (and men!) who dare to call themselves feminists.
